It's been a while since I posted an update because of the lockout. Now that football is back, the St. Louis Rams wasted no time upgrading the key areas that need attention. The wide receiver position was the focus of the draft as the Rams drafted a potential red-zone threat with TE Lance Kendricks and two sure handed wideouts in Austin Pettis and Greg Salas. On the free agency market Rams signed to a one-year deal Mike Sims-Walker adding more sure hand recievers for Sam Bradford. On the mix is Mark Clayton which was Bradfords favorite target aside from slot receiver extraordinaire Danny Amendola.

The Rams has been having problems holding fort at the right guard position since All-Pro Adam Timmerman retired. Since then it was a revolving chair on that position Richie Incognito man the position but character issues cut his stay in St.Louis short; Mark Setterstrom also did good manning the position but injuries keep creeping up and decided to let him go as a free agent. Then there is the project on using utility man OG/OT Adam Goldberg and OG John Greco. With the Rams tendering Greco shows that they still have some confidence on him and as football expert says "he just need some competition to prove himself".

Personally if given the chance to compete, John Greco might have found their answer to that position within the roster all along. Not drafting an interior lineman during the 2011 NFL draft has only enforced that Greco will be given a chance to compete although the Rams will try to add another veteran via free agency to add some depth.

The Rams basically need to upgrade the interior as a they where able to draft the Rams bookend tackles in Rodger Saffold and Jason Smith and they will be holding fort for quiet sometime. Center Jason Brown has been the anchor and the de-facto leader of the group since he was signed as a free agents in 2009 as he has shown consistency with his play.

Rams 2011 Draft Review

If I were to sum up the the first two days of the 2011 NFL Draft, it would be like this: a lot of surprises, and a lot of steals. Yes folks this year NFL draft has a lot of surprises which includes the chance for the Rams to pick the best pass rusher in this years draft class in North Carolina DE Robert Quinn.

Round 2 of the Rams draft was also a surprise even to the fans as Bill Devaney trade up with the Denver Broncos for the Rams to able to pick Wisconsin TE Lance Kendricks. Some would say this is a Josh McDaniels pick as McD likes to pass catching TE's with a good set of hands and Kendricks is one of the few with the best hands in his position. Sam Bradford will have another toy to play with.

Round 3 was also a surprise to most fans as the Rams drafted Boise State WR Austin Pettis. A big wideout 6' 3" with good route running skills and good hands (which is now becoming the trend of the Rams draft).

In Round 4 Rams got basically a similar wideout in Hawaii WR Greg Salas. The Rams continue to upgrade Sam Bradford's supporting cast with the addition of Salas. He is a highly productive receiver with great hands and outstanding toughness. He should compete for time as a slot receiver in their three- and four-receiver sets

Countdown to the 2011 NFL Draft: Julio Jones or the D-Linemen

It's obvious that the whole Rams' draft strategy will depend on 14th overall pick. It's a consensus by most draft experts that the Rams that Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones fills the urgent need "if" he's available by the time. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has a knack on developing quarterbacks and wide receivers so if the Rams where lucky enough to pick Jones, Sam Bradford' will be one happy camper.

If in case Jones is not availble, draft experts has said that the Rams will turn to drafting Defensive Linemen to atleast prepare for the eventual leaving of aging players DT Fred Robbins and DE James Hall. Prospect like defensive end Missouri's Aldon Smith, California's DE/DT Cameron Jordan and Illionois defensive tackle Corey Liuget are basically the Rams can afford to choose from. It's common knowledge head coach Steve Spagnoulo loves to using multiple defensive ends on passing downs to which disrupts opposing teams as part of defensive packages. Drafting any of the three prospect will surely upgarde their need on their defensive line. Imagine having Chirs Long, Fred Robbins, James Hall, George Selvie plus any of those three prospect rotating every now and then will surely make those opposing offensive coordinator lose their mind.

Round 1 - Sure pick : DE Aldon Smith, Missouri; DL Adrian Clayborn, Iowa; DT Corey Lieuget, Illinois;
If in case: WR Julio Jones, Alabama

Round 2 - Guard: Danny Watkins, Baylor or Marcus Cannon, TCU

Round 3 - Outside Linebacker: Mason Foster, Washington or Bruce Carter, North Carolina;
Wide Receiver: Torrey Smith, Maryland; Leonard Hankerson, Miami.

Round 4 - Free Safety: Jaiquawn Jarrett, Temple or Jeron Johnson, Boise State

Round 5 - Runningback: Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State; DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma; JacQuizz Rogers, Oregon State.

Round 7 - Anything goes OLB and WR

Rams 2011 Draft Overview

The NFL draft is forth coming (regardless of there's a new CBA or a lockout) and this year the Rams have the 14th pick to which the team management has a wide range of choices unlike last year that team picks number 1 overall ( to which the Rams did good by pick franchise QB Sam Bradford). This year the key areas that the Rams need are as follows: WR, DT, DE, OLB, RB depth, OG, Secondary depth.

Wide Receiver: It's evident the Rams need some talent on this area as they need someone that can REALLY stretch the field. Unless the Rams signs a very good veteran wideout, Bill Devaney will draft the next Torry Holt and/or Isaac Bruce. Most draft expert expect the Rams would pick Alabama's Julio Jones IF he's available if not then they might settle for either Miami's Leonard Hankerson or Torrey Smith on the second round.

Defensive Tackle: The Rams needs to upgrade this area as Fred Robbins is not gonna be there for long, and Gary Gibson maybe solid but he's a free agent. This year's draft has a lot of prospects for the position of defensive tackle which includes Corey Liuget and Stephen Paea.

Defensive End: This area is also in need of an upgrade as James Hall is 34 and he too won't be playing long enough. Spagnuolo likes his DE who can play inside and outside and the draft has at least three prospects that can do so: Iowa's Adrian Clayborn, Wisconsin's J.J. Watt and California's Cameron Jordan.

Outside Linebacker: This has been a pressing need as the Rams has been doing a musical chair on the weakside position. Veteran Na'il Diggs was solid but injuries (and age) has caught up. David Vobora and Chris Chamber where able to hold fort but they are not enough. This year's draft only one prospect that I think the Rams should pull some strings to ensure he is pick in the 2nd round is Washington's Mason Foster Foster can play all three linebacker position, has leadership skills and has good coverage and blitz skills.

Runningback: Steven Jackson has been the main man for the Rams yet he has not been given some quality back up. With Josh McDaniels handling the offense, expect some passing plays for the Running backs too and the draft has several prospects for that which includes Oklahoma's DeMarco Murray and Oregon State's Jacquizz Rodgers.

Offensive Guard: Interior lineman depth is also a key area as the John Greco and Adam Goldberg are now unrestricted free agents. If the Rams are planning for a trade down then they could target Florida's Mike Pouncey. If not they can pick Wisconsin's John Moffit, or Baylor's Danny Watkins.

Secondary: This became a need when O.J. Atogwe decided to sign with the Redskins and also GM Bill Devaney has been "eyeing" some good defensive back prospect like Colorado CB Jimmy Smith, UCLA Safety Rahim Moore and Texas DB Aaron Williams can also be included on this list.

DT Barry Cofield would make sense with the Rams

If the free agency starts today and GM Bill Devaney should at least sign players that are familiar with Steve Spagnuolo's defense which is why free agent defensive tackle Barry Cofield would be a significant upgrade to the Rams D-line since Cofield is only 26 years old, he knows the system and a solid run-stopper.

Rams has vast options at pick #14

Unlike the last year, the Rams will be picking virtually in the middle of the draft. At picked no. 14, the Rams has vast options on which prospect to pick. The Rams will decide on who would to they pick once the finished scouring the free agency market for more proven/serviceable veterans before drafting the unpolished but potentially talented players.

Assuming there is no free agency coming in, here are the list of prospect that the Rams could possible picked at no.14: Wide Receiver Julio Jones, Defensive Ends Ryan Kerrigan, Aldon Smith, Adrian Clayborn and Defensive Tackles Corey Liuget and Stephen Paea.

Rams Off-Seasons Starts Anew

The Rams almost got in to the playoffs this year but felt short because of the lack of deep passing game in the offense. It was evident that the Rams needed to upgrade the offense and there were calls for a change on the offensive coordinator position as Pat Shurmur offense is deemed "no longer fit".

Fortunately, days after the end of the regular season, the Cleveland Browns hired Shurmur to be their new head coach. This saved the Rams management the trouble of "relieving" Shurmur (although there was no real plans to replace Shurmur but a dire need to "turn up volume" of the offense was in order). The Rams then found his replacement in former Broncos head coach and offensive guru Josh McDaniels.

McDaniels hiring had some mix reactions to some of the fans and football experts as McDaniels has been known to be a "pass-happy" coach and is not a "West Coast Offense" guy which is good for Sam Bradford in some ways because this would benefit his skills but this also mean he will learn a brand new scheme. However during his press conference and after talking to both Sam Bradford and Steven Jackson, he has emphasized that both Bradford and Jackson will be the focus of his new "balanced but aggressive offensive scheme" which is remain to be seen until training camp and pre-season.

The next thing on the agenda for the Rams will be the free agency which will start around March 2011. the team needs to address the following positions: Wide Receiver, a backup running back, Offensive Lineman (the right guard in particular), the weakside linebacker, depth on the defensive line and in the secondary.

Rams lost to the Cardinals 17-13

Even though the Rams lost, the whole team showed some poise especially the Rams defense. DE Chris Long and DT Fred Robbins showed some early presence to the game. Sam Bradford performed nicely despite the 3 interceptions which is not a common outing for a rookie quarterback. New Ram WR Mark Clayton played like he has played with the Rams for a long time as he has a career high 10 catches in the game.

On the other hand, Rams should keep SS James Butler on the bench as he got burned on the winning touchdown pass from Anderson to Larry Fitzgerald for the win which only show his weakness for the pass. Craig Dahl should cement his position as the Rams starting strong safety.

Sam Bradford Era in St. Louis starts tomorrow

After missing out on most of the pre-season due to a busy personal schedule I am now back in blogging before the start of the Sam Bradford era of the St. Louis Rams 2010 regular season.

After a very impressive outing during the preseason, Sam Bradford now enters the season the the starter for the Rams basically unseating veteran QB AJ Feeley.

Experts and NFL Analysts are expecting the Rams to win the NFC West this year because of some of the clear improvement that where made during the offseason specially the run defense. But the question remains if the Rams offensive line can hold opposing defense so that Sam Bradford can do his thing and also give running back Steven Jackson the running lanes he needed. I would hope Roger Saffold lives up to the jersey number that he was given to be a once great left tackle for Rams named Orlando Pace.

OT Alex Barron traded to the Cowboys for LB Bobby Carpenter

Personally, I consider this trade a good one since both teams are in need to fill those positions in need: Cowboys need some help at offensive tackle after the release of Flozell Adams and the Rams needs upgrade their linebacker corp. To some football experts Bobby Carpenter is a bust but I my opinion, he's in a wrong system. the Cowboys ran a base 3-4 system on which the OLB's mostly rush the passer and the ILB's are to stop the run and do some coverage. the Cowboys are basically set with Bradie James and Keith Brooking manning the ILB's position which relegated Carpenter as a coverage linebacker on nickel and dime situations. Carpenter's coverage skills is an asset for the Rams since he's been covering All Pro Jason Witten during practice and with that he significantly improve on that area. He will battle David Vobora , Na'il Diggs and Larry Grant for one of the outside linebacker positions.

Needs Analysis: It's not every year that a team in need of a franchise QB gets a shot at one, but the Rams could get their chance with Sam Bradford. With how well he performed at Monday's workout, and if the doctors clear him, he will be the No. 1 overall pick. After that decision, it might be a good idea to move down in the other rounds and get multiple picks to fill up the roster. At least one wide receiver is a must, and a third-down running back would help if they don't add one in free agency. The defense needs help at left defensive end.

Day 2 Summary: Rams solidify O-Line picked OT from Indiana

Day 2 of the NFL draft started with a not so spectacular yet a very solid pick as the Rams picked Offensive Tackle Rodger Saffold from Indiana. This pick shows that they will protect Sam Bradford and Steven Jackson. It also signals Alex Barron's upcoming departure as Scaffold might start opposite Jason Smith.

Round 3 was a bit of a surprise for me a the Rams drafted cornerback Jerome Murphy of South Florida. This pick is obviously influenced by coach Spagnuolo as he likes big and physical defensive backs (Jerome Butler and Ron Bartell are above 6 feet in height).

"With the number 1 overall pick, The Rams pick --- Sam Bradford, Quarterback from Oklahoma". There's no surprise for this pick. The Rams now have a franchise quarterback they can build over for years to come.

There's a caution though, the Rams should address the offensive line and the wide receiver spots on the remaining rounds. If not, Rams should sit him for a season.

A Run down on the Rams top 3 QB prospects

The NFL draft is fast approaching and the St. Louis Rams will be on hand for the top overall pick. And with the release of Marc Bulger the Rams are gonna draft a quarterback regardless of which round. I'm gonna do a brief review of the top 3 QB prospects that the Rams have recently scouted.

Sam Bradford (Oklahoma)
Pros: Strong Arm, Accuracy, Smart
Cons: injury concerns
Projected Round: 1

Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame)
Pros: Knowledge of the pro system, Accuracy
Cons: Attitude, Mobility ( injured toe)

Pros: Very Accurate, good arm strength

Draft Scenario Number 3: Trading down and get more picks

I'm leaning more with this scenario since the Rams has a lot of areas that needed to be addressed. I can predict at least three possible trade down scenarios:

Rams trades #1 overall pick to Tampa Bay for the #3 pick and the #42 pick (Round 2): The Bucs are in dire need of an upgrade on their defensive front they get to draft either Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy while the Rams can draft Sam Bradford on pick #3 (the Lions will either pick McCoy or OT Russell Okung). As of late the Rams have some success drafting potentially good player on the second round (Ron Bartell, James Lauranaitis, Donnie Avery) possible pick #33 WR Arrelious Benn (Illinois) and #42 Outside Linebacker or OL

Rams trades #1 overall pick to Cleveland or Washington and an additional 2nd round pick: This scenario would be considered unconventional but still possible if the Rams considered addressing the offensive line first and address the quarterback spot in the 2nd round. A possible pick here would be Oklahoma OT Trent Williams who is considered best to play Right Tackle which is one position the Rams need to address. For the additional 2nd Round would be Jon Asamoah of Illionois or Sergio Render or Virginia Tech on which both can address the Right Guard spot.

Draft Scenario Number 2: Drafting either Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy on pick #1

Here's another draft scenario that was brewing before Sam Bradford rose his stock. Drafting either Suh or McCoy will upgrade the defensive line unit which struggles to stop the run because of injuries specially in the middle. If this is the direction that GM Bill Devaney would take then it's a clear indication that they will take a quarterback on Round 2. It's been reported that the Rams will host a private workout for Texas QB Colt McCoy before the draft keeping their options open on that position.

Draft Scenario Number 1: Drafting QB Sam Bradford at pick No.1

This scenario would be what most would people expect as the Oklahoma star quarterback is viewed as a potential franchise quarterback because of his cannon of arm strength combined with his uncanny accuracy as well as his leadership skills which is rare for a college prospect.

Pros: The Rams gets their future franchise quarterback with all those intangibles they are on the right track on their rebuilding process.

Cons: Bradford has a history of injuries which includes injuries to his throwing shoulder. It would be foolish for him to start right away unless the offensive line has been given attention.

Rams To Work Out Colt McCoy Before Draft

The Rams plan to take a closer look at their options for drafting a quarterback, including Texas’ Colt McCoy.

St. Louis will hold a private workout — date unknown — for McCoy in Austin before the NFL draft begins April 22, according to an ESPN.com source.

McCoy is working out today during the Texas Longhorns’ pro day, and NFL.com reports more yhan 75 coaches and scouts representing 30 teams (Rams and Lions are not represented) are in Austin.

The Rams could still be considering taking one of the stellar defensive tackles, Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy, with their first overall pick and then look to pick up the Texas QB in the second round (No. 33 overall).

It's only weeks until the 2010 NFL Draft and there's no clear idea on which draft prospect will the Rams take for the top overall pick. Would it be Oklahoma's Sam Bradford or would it be either defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh (Nebrask) or Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma) or would there be a trade-down to get additional picks .

I will be posting a series of blog post on each scenarios and explain my take on that particular scenario and what would be the possible benefits that the team would gain.

Rams Re-signs DE James Hall and 2 ex-Giants

The Rams brought back an important piece of their defense Monday afternoon, re-signing valuable defensive lineman James Hall.

Bringing Hall back provides the Rams with a veteran presence that might otherwise have been missing.

Hall established himself as the team’s most versatile defensive lineman, starting 14 games at defensive end. But as part Spagnuolo’s scheme, defensive linemen are expected to be able to play multiple positions along the line.

Nobody did more moving around than Hall, who would regularly shift to the inside in passing situations.

Rams sign 2 ex-Giants

Continuing to add to their offseason roster, the St. Louis Rams on Monday signed cornerback Kevin Dockery and tight end Darcy Johnson to one-year deals. Both players are former New York Giants who were not tendered as restricted free agents this offseason.

Dockery, 5-10, 188, had 10 career starts in four seasons with the Giants and has three career regular-season interceptions. He should compete for the nickel back job in St. Louis and be a core player on special teams.

Johnson, 27, spent most of his rookie season (2006) on the Giants’ practice squad, and then missed the entire ‘07 season after suffering a knee injury in training camp.

Off Season Transactions Update

As of this writing the St. Louis Rams has signed and re-sign key players that would provide needed depth on key positions

Former Eagle and Browns Center/Guard Hank Fraley signed a three-year deal with the Rams. He is possibly penciled as a starter at the Right Guard spot. Rams also re-signed G Mark Setterstrom to provide competition and depth on the interior.

The Rams also has re-signed veteran long snapper Chris Massey for 4 years reportedly for $4.4 million. Making him the richest long snapper in the NFL to date.

And finally linebacker David Vobora, has signed his one-year tender offer with the team. Vobora adds depth to the position that is in need of an upgrade

Rams starts free agency: Familiar Faces joins the Rams

Rams started free agency by signing veterans: quarterback A.J. Feeley (ex-Eagles) and defensive tackles Fred Robbins (ex-Giants). Although not spectacular but solid and reliable veterans that knows the systems. Feeley knows Pat Shurmur's system very while he was with the Eagles. Robbins has played for Spagnuolo with the Giants and he will provide mentorship to the young defensive linemen.

Sign good free agents

Everybody is raving about the Rams should draft Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh on the first overall pick on the upcoming NFL Draft in April. Others says the Rams should draft a future francise quarterbacks either Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) or Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame). Other draftnicks also say the Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy is a safer pick than Suh.

Personally, I would be watching more on who are the Rams are sign during the free agency. I just recently read that Jacksonville just recently released former Rams WR Torry Holt which in my opinion should the Rams sign back to provide a solid foundation on a young and inexperienced receiver corp. Sure Holt has slowed done because of age but Holt has a good rapport with current QB Marc Bulger and at least take off the pressure on Steven Jackson. If signed, Holt can take the pressure of Donnie Avery and help other budding wideouts like Brooks Foster, Brandon Gibason and Danny Amedola (who is also the Rams best return guy since Az-Zahir Hakim).

Other areas that the Rams need to address are the backup running back, outside linebackers, offensive line should also be addressed on both free agency and the draft.

SuperBowl Slingers: Drew Brees versus Peyton Manning

SuperBowl XLIV (or SuperBowl 44) is coming close as the SuperBowl Week festivities has started today. And for those who where not able to follow the NFL playoffs, the teams that would battle for the Vince Lombardi trophy are Indianapolis Colts lead by NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning against the surprising New Orleans Saints lead by quarterback Drew Brees in a showdown of two of the leagues bests.

Although both teams have superb offenses, their defense will be the ones to be put to the test as the team that has a better defense wins the coveted Lombardi trophy. The Colts defense is lead by All-Pro defensive end Dwight Freeney while on the otherside, All-Pro safety Darren Sharper will rally his defense in an attempt to bring in the franchise's very first SuperBowl title.

A look ahead on the St. Louis Rams 2010 Off-Season

Last season was one of the most disappointing for the St. Louis Rams as the team finished 1-15. Though its understandable that injuries was really the biggest factor to the Rams dismal season (blaming it on some player will an overstatement in my opinion).

Key areas that the Rams need to address in the off-season:

Wide Receiver
Quarterback
Offensive Line (Right Side)
Backup Running back
Outside Linebackers
Defensive Line

Most draft analysts where saying that the Rams should draft Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh but in my opinion trading down would be a much wiser choice UNLESS we can fill up some of those holes in the free agency. I have nothing against Suh because if ever the Rams decided to draft him, he would free up blockers away from DE Chris Long and possibly moving Adam Carriker back to defensive end.

2nd Day Draft Picks Where So-So but solid

Based from the several articles that I read today from GM Bill Devaney's breakdown to the fan's reaction as well some of the Draft analysts analysis, The 2nd day of the Rams draft was more on "so-so" for me personally. Bill Devaney and Coach Spags like what they have picked but it could have been better.

	Fletcher is 6-feet tall and, like we said yesterday in regard to Utah cornerback Sean Smith, corners this tall can have a hard time changing directions. In Fletcher's case, he doesn't have the burst or hip fluidity to consistently match up in man coverage. However, he does a good job masking his weaknesses with instincts. Because of his long arms he doesn't necessarily have to be in perfect position to make a play on the ball.

	Scott possesses the adequate size to be an effective one-gap defensive tackle. However, his quickness is just average and we'd like to see him play with more of a mean streak. We do believe he has enough strength to develop into an effective interior run-stopper.

	Foster's a relatively fluid route-runner for his size. He possesses the body control to make the tough catch away from his frame. However, he takes too long to reach top-end speed and needs to work on getting a cleaner release against press coverage.

	from Atlanta
	Null is a developmental prospect with a strong arm and limited mobility. We like his upside due to good decision-making and his maturity as a leader.
7	2(211)	Chris Ogbonnaya	RB	Texas
	Ogbonnaya is a big north-south back who possesses great overall strength. He lacks in terms of top-end speed and elusiveness in the open field, but he is able to pick up tough yards after contact.

As expected the St. Louis Rams picked Baylor OT Jason Smith for the number 2 pick overall and on the 2nd round the Rams filled in a need at Middle linebacker as they passed over USC's Rey Malauaga and drafted Ohio State's James Laurinaitis which is more of a three-down player and is a solid character.

On Day 2, I would expect the Rams to add depth on the Wideout positions and maybe a quarterback or a runningback.

Round 1: Offensive Tackle Jason Smith - Baylor

The reason that an offensive tackle should be draft on the 1st round because the Rams should protect Marc Bulger at all cost and both Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe are NFL ready with Smith having more upside.

While both Smith and Monroe are elite pass protectors, the former offers more in the run-blocking department.

Why not Aaron Curry? a franchise left tackle holds way more positional value than a linebacker.

Round 2: Middle Linebacker James Laurinaitis - Ohio State

Will Witherspoon will be moving over to weakside linebacker, creating a need for the Rams in the middle. St. Louis could desperately use a dynamic talent like James Laurinaitis as a leader for its abysmal defense.

Round 3: Wide Reciever Hakeem Nicks - North Carolina

What I like about Hakeem Nicks aside from the size and is his route running and a sure catching hands. Speed and quickness are just average but with Rams now using a balanced West Coast type of offense speed is not an issue in my opinion.

The Wide Reciever position has become an urgent need when Pro Bowler Torry Holt was released so the Rams stockpiled their pre-draft visits with a lot of WR prospects in this years draft and here's are the scouting reports of some of these prospects based from various scouting websites.

Texas Tech WR Michal Crabtree
Height: 6-3, Weight: 209

Strengths: Sensational playmaker…utilizes his hands very well in catching the football away from his body…Crabtree is a physical player who has demonstrated that getting off a jam at the line of scrimmage is not an issue…has had the additional advantage of lining up at both flankers and slot positions, and has found success while playing both…runs crisp routes, so transition to the NFL level should be more smoothly than others…outstanding vertical leap, catches the football at its highest point…should develop into a terrific red zone threat…

Weaknesses: Top end speed is not going to be ideal, reportedly…added speculation circulates Crabtree’s 40 time as he is not going to run at the Scouting Combine, rather at individual workout…recent high-profile receivers who have not run well, Dwayne Jarrett, Malcolm Kelly, etc. have not progressed well to the NFL level…Crabtree has had an amazing collegiate career, but it was only two years, and prior to that, he was a high school QB, so as a wide receiver, he is still developing…playing in the spread offense at Texas Tech has, in all likelihood, glorified his statistics…will he be able to separate from cornerbacks at the next level…?

Overall: The one knock on Michael Crabtree’s NFL potential is his top-end speed, besides that he is, in many scouts opinion, infallible. He is extremely quick off the ball, and the more physical nature of the National Football League will be a fit for Michael Crabtree’s game. He has outstanding hands, and it is almost unbelievable to think that he has only played the position for two years. There are two schools of thought in regards to his experience or lack thereof, some may feel that there is going to be a transition phase where he struggles to the NFL level, some feel that due to his inexperience, the best is yet to come. The Andre Johnson/Larry Fitzgerald comparisons are out there, and they are accurate. Michael Crabtree is a top five talent in the 2009 NFL Draft, and the early favorite for 2009 Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Missouri WR Jeremy Maclin
Height: 6-1, Weight: 198

Strengths: Has sprinter speed and possesses acceleration that is second to none…ultra-talented, as he can make an impact in the passing, rushing, and returning game…has produced off the chart all-purpose yardage numbers…has been the focus of an offensive attack for several seasons now, and although the opposing defense has game planned to stop him, rarely any do…many times track stars are sloppy route runners, that is not the case in regards to Jeremy Maclin, his route running isn’t Jerry Rice caliber, but it is at least average...bottom line—if he gets a step on the defense, he’s gone…

Weaknesses: Needs work on catching the football, his receiving skills are not the smoothest…very fluid with the ball in his hands, needs to adapt that to his game prior to the ball being in his hands…the spread offense that he played in at Missouri can be a detriment to his future NFL prospects…listed at under 200 pounds, and around 6 foot, many doubt his ability to become a true #1 WR…hasn’t had to go over the middle and make the tough grab on a regular basis…not the red-zone threat that many 2009 prospects are…to get in to the end zone, an offense may have to be a bit more creative…

Overall: The comparisons have been made to Ted Ginn Jr. due to their receiving/returning skills and the fact that they are both world class speed athletes, however, the comparison falls short. For one, Maclin is a bigger receiver prospect, and two, he is just a better natural receiver than Ginn. The better comparison is a poor man’s Reggie Wayne. Maclin will immediately help an offense and on special teams, just don’t expect a legit 1,000 season right away. Maclin will take time to learn the nuances of the National Football League, but he has a ton of potential and will stretch a defense like not many in the league can.

Maryland WR Darius Heyward-Bey
Height: 6-2, Weight: 206

Strengths: Has electrifying speed and quickness…has the capabilities to take every play the distance and will provide whatever team selects him with explosiveness that they may currently lack…he possesses a unique combo of size and speed that is rarely seen—think Roddy White as a comparison…a versatile wide receiver prospect that can stretch the defense, go across the middle, and can be a factor in the red zone…plays with an edge at the WR position, gets after it in blocking the oppositions secondary down field…possibly has more potential than ANY other wide receiver in the 2009 NFL Draft…

Weaknesses: Had a very up and down collegiate career…will need to work on his hands, at times lets the ball get in on him…focusing on technique is essential in regards to progression…needs to work on refining his route running, has a tendency to get sloppy at times….statistics were nothing to write home about…could develop a little more strength to better develop his level of physicality…does he rely too much on his speed and quickness?

Overall: Some scouts and pundits are sleeping on Darius Heyward-Bey in my opinion. Critics will point to an underwhelming career at Maryland where he never dominated, but if one were to watch the Maryland football games you would clearly see that Heyward-Bey was not utilized very well at all and the passing attack, primarily at the quarterback position, of the Terps leaves a lot to be desired. Many are focusing on Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin, however, don’t be surprised if you see pundits start using the terminology "stock moving up" in regards to Darius Heyward-Bey during the Scouting Combine and thereafter. Make no mistakes about it, Heyward-Bey is going to light up the Scouting Combine, and don’t be stunned if he even runs a faster 40 time than speedster Jeremy Maclin, and opens up the eyes of scouts in the process.

Hakeem Nicks
Wide Reciever - North Carolina

Height:6-1 , Weight: 212lbs.

The 6-2 wideout has had three productive years with the Tar Heels. As a freshman in 2006 he caught 39 passes for 660 yards, both records for a North Carolina freshman. As a sophomore he caught 74 passes for 958 yards and five touchdowns. His 958 yards ranked third all-time in UNC history. He shattered the record in 2008, tallying 1,222 receiving yards. He also set a record with 12 touchdown receptions. Even with playing just three years, Nicks has been the most prolific receiver in Tar Heel history.

Nicks is not a pure speed receiver, but he has certainly been productive. At 6-2 and 210 pounds, he has decent size and could develop into a solid complimentary receiver on just about any team in the NFL. It will take a big effort to move up into the first round, but Nicks' performance at the combine should be the difference between a second and third round selection.

2/11 Update: Nicks may even be able to sneak into the first round if teams start going after wide receivers early. Nicks is looking more and more like the fifth best receiver in the draft. The difference will be how well he does in the combine. There are some speed concerns with Nicks and if he quells those concerns, he will be a first or second round selection.

Brandon Tate

Wide Reciever - North Carolina

Height:6-0, Weight:183 lbs.

A knee injury sidelined Brandon Tate for most of his senior year, but he still had a very productive career at North Carolina. During the 2008 campaign he caught 16 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns in just five games before the injury. In 2007 he totaled 1,765 all-purpose yards. A majority of those yards came from kick-off and punt returns and that skill will make him very attractive to certain NFL teams.

It will be his return skills that give him an opportunity in the NFL, but Tate could be a solid second or third receiving option on certain teams sooner or later. His collegiate production was never anything that impressive, but he did do a nice job of complimenting Hakeem Nicks, who could be a first or second round choice this year. Tate's 6-1, 195 pound frame will not allow him to be a primary receiver in the NFL and he has too many questions to answer. That means he will not likely be drafted during the first day of the draft.

However, he should show at the combine that his knee injury is behind him and that he is a quick player who can run decent routes and catch the ball in traffic. If that is the case, Tate will not last very long into the second day.

Opinion: Most of these years wide receiver prospects have the size to go with the speed which mean it's a good year for the position. The Rams will probably draft a wide receiver on the 2nd and 3rd rounds and the possibility of drafting one or two from these top picks. Personally I would go with either Heyward-Bey or Nicks on round 2 with the possibility of getting Tate on round 3. Crabtree and Maclin are sure 1st rounders unless the Rams drafts either of them on the #2 pick overall (which I doubt).

Rams trade for Atlanta WR Laurent Robinson

The Rams need help at the wide receiver position and got some Monday by trading for Atlanta wideout Laurent Robinson. The Rams acquired Robinson by switching draft positions with the Falcons in both the fifth and sixth rounds. They didn’t lose any picks; they just changed positions in both rounds with Atlanta.

The Rams get Atlanta’s fifth-round (No. 160 overall) and sixth-round (No. 196 overall) picks; Atlanta gets the Rams’ fifth-round (No. 138 overall) and sixth-round (No. 176 overall) picks.

Linebacker Prospects Scouting Resport

Wake Forest OLB Aaron Curry
Height: 6-3, Weight: 240

Strengths: Naturally strong…explosive first step…offers exceptional versatility at the NFL level where he could play strong side in a 4-3 or 3-4 defense or in the middle of a 4-3…nose for the football with 6 career interceptions…ideal size with the desired bulk…adequate in coverage…experienced, team leader…excels at shedding blockers…should be able to make an impact immediately…attacks the ball

carrier…good player recognition skills…decent speed for a player his size…

Weakness: Like many star college LBs, he can go over pursue at times…coverage skills are only adequate if asked to play man coverage…will struggle if forced to match up extensively with top tier TEs…

Overall: The best overall linebacking prospect seen since Lavar Arrington, even a more complete player than A.J. Hawk or Keith Rivers. Curry’s versatility will serve him well and allows him to be an option for many different schemes. Curry will make an impact immediately and serve to make any defense he plays on better immediately. Curry, a four year starter at Wake, was named the 2009 Butkus Award winner over fellow standouts James Laurinaitis and Rey Maualuga.

USC LB Rey Maualuga

Height: 6-3, Weight: 250

Strengths: Ideal size and bulk…freakish natural athlete who is incredibly strong…ultra aggressive with an attacking style…an intimidating player…has a knack for the big hit…will make a lot of highlight reel type plays…still improving as a player and took big steps forward in 2008…demonstrated good ball skills in zone coverage…good burst off the line of scrimmage…

Weakness: His aggressiveness can be his downfall at times as he goes for the big hit instead of wrapping up…tends to over pursue and run himself out of plays…still needs to improve his play recognition skills…timed speed is only average…will struggle to handle man coverage, as he can be a bit stiff…concerns about his maturity level, especially after some off the field issues and hits that injured teammates at USC…more of a “thumper”….

Overall: One of the flashiest players in college football, Maualuga will be on NFL highlight reels for year to come. His aggressive style and tendency for big hits will make him an asset in the NFL, especially if he can keep his emotions under control. He could play MLB in either a 3-4 or a 4-3 scheme, but would probably struggle if asked to play in a Cover 2 type scheme. Maualuga is probably a little overrated by the general public but he is still a solid NFL prospect with a ton of upside.

Ohio State LB James Laurinaitis
Height: 6-3, Weight: 240

Strengths: Solid NFL frame with good bulk...good closing speed when rushing the passer...explosive hitter...better ball skills than given credit for...demonstrates good instincts and always flowing towards the ball...does a great job in zone coverage...dominate college player...works well through trash to locate the ball carrier...offers some scheme versatility....

Weaknesses: Needs to improve his functional strength...may struggle to shed blockers at the next level...will not be able to add a lot of bulk at the next level...probably a low upside player...played with several other NFL caliber players...probably a little overrated because he will struggle to make a lot of impact plays.

Overall: Following in the steps of recent Buckeye linebackers such as A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter, James "Little Animal" Laurinaitis is probably a little overrated by the general public but still projects as a solid NFL starter. Laurinaitis is one of the most decorated collegiate linebackers in recent history, including a Butkus Award win. He can probably start in virtually any scheme but projects best on the weakside or in the middle of a standard 4-3 defense.

Opinion: The Rams really need to solidify their linebacking group specially the middle linebacker position since Will Weatherspoon is back at his original position which is the weakside LB spot and veteran Chris Draft manning the middle for now. If the Rams do get a Linebacker on the 1st round its obviouse the Aaron Curry will land on the #2 pick overall but personally it's highly unlikely because the Rams are sure to get an offensive tackle on the 1st round.

Round 2 is where the Rams have a success (Donnie Avery, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Ron Bartell, etc.) so here the Rams can draft the top 2 Middle Linebackers namely Rey Maualuga and James Laurinaitis. Both are high on my list.

Kyle Boller signs as backup quarterback

For weeks, the Rams appeared on the verge of signing veteran Gus Frerotte as the backup quarterback to Marc Bulger. But the Rams grew tired of waiting on Frerotte, and wasted little time signing his replacement.

Just a few hours after completing their first minicamp under coach Steve Spagnuolo, the Rams signed former Baltimore Raven Kyle Boller to a free-agent contract. It's a two-year deal but further contract details weren't available.

"We think he's a good fit for us backing up Marc," general manager Billy Devaney said. "He's a young guy that still has a ton of ability and a lot of upside. This is a really good pickup for us."

The Rams' depth chart at quarterback now includes Marc Bulger, Boller, Brock Berlin and Jeff Otis. Boller has started 42 NFL games, all with the Ravens. He spent last season on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. If healthy, Boller should serve as a viable backup. He is also relatively young -- 27 -- so he has more upside than the 37-year-old Frerotte.

Opinion: Rams made the right move on signing Kyle Boller rather than the aging Gus Frerotte.

TE Billy Bajema Signs with the St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams have a new blocking specialist at tight end. Free agent Billy Bajema, who had spent his four previous seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, has agreed to terms with the Rams. Contract details weren’t immediately available. Bajema, 26, replaces Anthony Becht, who was released by the Rams earlier this month and subsequently signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Draft Prospect Spotlight: OT Jason Smith

Strengths: Tremendously gifted athlete…a former tight end, has unreal feet and quickness for an offensive tackle prospect…out of the top three offensive tackles expected to go very early in the 2009 NFL Draft, may be the best pass blocker of the bunch…is just scratching the surface of his pro potential…at 6’5 298, there is still plenty of room for growth and improvement…uses his hands effectively to keep on-rushing defenders from getting inside on him and controlling him…doesn’t seem to lose focus and plays every play to the whistle…

Weaknesses: Inexperience at the offensive tackle position is a large concern…weighing in at just under 300 pounds, will he get overpowered by stronger defensive ends the likes of Julius Pepper and Kyle Vanden Bosch?…the measure of the length of his arms is going to be a point of emphasis, shorter arms would limit overall potential…has a long way in developing into a premier run blocking offensive tackle…athletically gifted yes, a somewhat raw offensive tackle prospect, also yes…will need more time to adapt to the NFL level than will Andre Smith and Eugene Monroe…has draft momentum on his side, but may be slightly overrated…a high bust factor…

Overall: Whereas there is not very much concern that Andre Smith or Eugene Monroe will becomes draft busts, there is some concern surrounding the future of Jason Smith. There has to be, a former tight end transitioning to offensive tackle, with a slight frame, there are causes for concerns. A year ago, 1st round pick Duane Brown made the transition and performed very well, and Smith is a superior prospect than Brown. Jason Smith has the skill set to become a stellar left tackle, but his development is likely to take longer than the other two top offensive tackle prospects, and is likely to struggle early in his career. That being said, there is a ton to like in Jason Smith, he is mega-athletic and if he can pick up NFL game faster than anticipated you have a stud on the left side of the offensive line for the next decade and a half.

Opinion: Another sure fire prospect that the Rams could draft at #2 overall. Smith and Virginia's Eugene Monroe are basically equal on most cases with Monroe having a slight upside in terms of experience as a offensive tackle.

Draft Prospect Spotlight: OT Eugene Monroe

Virginia OT Eugene Monroe

Height: 6-6, Weight: 315

Strengths: Possesses the best combination of pass blocking and run blocking of any prospect in the 2009 NFL Draft…played at Virginia, which has been increasingly effective at producing top level NFL talent on both the offensive and defensive lines…is such a terrific talent that he kept top 2008 NFL prospect Branden Albert at offensive guard…at 6’6 315, has prototypical size for a NFL left tackle…dominated at times throughout his collegiate career, but perhaps even more importantly, he never seemed to battle inconsistencies that many offensive tackle prospects do…a very low bust factor, and you know when your drafting a prospect the likes of Eugene Monroe, he will contribute from day one…

Weaknesses: There is not a specific element of his’s game that one can point to as being superstar level quality…very good prospect, but can he be great?…low bust factor yes, but also may not possess the potential and ceiling that a few other offensive tackle prospects in the 2009 draft class do…one would have thought that with top-tier NFL talent the likes of Monroe and Albert playing side by side the Virginia rushing attack would have been more dominant…would be well served to add some more muscle to his wiry 6’6 frame… would like to see him play with a bit more of nasty streak…

Overall: There is not much to dislike in regards to the draft prospects of Eugene Monroe. Eugene Monroe is another safe pick and there is little to no chance that a team in the top ten do not select him to protect the blindside of their quarterback. Eugene Monroe has long arms, uses his hands very effectively, and is arguably a better pass blocker than Andre Smith. Eugene Monroe will continue to progress and develop, and although he may not have Pro Bowl level potential like some, he will start and contribute immediately.

My Opinion: Before, I go over my opinions about the prospect in particu;ar, I just wanna say that the Rams are clearly gonna draft an offensive tackle to address the loss of Orlando Pace. the idea of moving Alex Barron to left tackle is a bit unclear because Barron works better at RT.

Regarding Eugene Monroe, the possibility of him being drafted at #2 overall is close to none unless Detroit drafts him beforehand. Monroe has a similar report to his fellow Virginia alumnus DE Chris Long (which the Rams drafted in 2008) on which he has the best overall skillset but little room to improve (so as they thought).

Versatile O-Lineman Adam Goldberg re-signs with the Rams

Rams has re-signed offensive lineman Adam Goldberg to a two-year deal. Contract terms weren't not available.

In three seasons with St. Louis, Goldberg has proven to be a valuable backup and spot starter. With Goldberg on board, the Rams now has valuable depth on both tackle and guard positions.

Rams Add Depth on both Offensive and Defensive Line

Continuing to build their offseason roster, the Rams have re-signed offensive lineman Mark Setterstrom and defensive end Eric Moore, as well as four street free agents.

Setterstrom, who has missed most of the the past two seasons with knee injuries, has started 9 games since being taken in the seventh round of the 2006 draft. A healthy Setterstrom could compete for a starting job at guard, or at worst provide depth on the interior. He suffered a preseason knee injury last August which ended his season, but participated Monday in the start of the Rams’ offseason conditioning program.

Moore, has spent the past 2 1/2 seasons with the Rams, spending part of that time on the practice squad. He appeared in seven games for the Rams last season in a reserve and special teams role, recording five tackles from scrimmage with one sack and 3 quarterback hurries.

Also signed were quarterback Jeff Otis, defensive back Marcus Brown, tight end Eric Butler, and center Tim Mattran.

Rams finally released Torry Holt

Torry Holt's days in St. Louis has finally come to an end when the Rams finally released the 7-time Pro Bowl wide receiver. Prior to his release, Holt has already told the media that he wants out and wanna finish his career elsewhere.

Before that the Rams also released another 7-time Pro Bowler in Offensive Tackle Orlando Pace. Pace was hounded by injuries which contributed to his release.

The Rams gets an additional $14 Million in salary cap space.

Rams signed FB Mike Karney for 3 Years

According to ESPN.com's Jonathan Clayton, the St. Louis Rams finally have a full backfield after reaching a three-year contract agreement with fullback Mike Karney.

Karney agreed to a three-year, $3.6 million contract that includes $1.2 million in guarantees, according to a source. The Rams have been struggling at that position since they released Madison Hedgecock in 2007. Hedgecock ended up becoming a Pro Bowl alternate for the New York Giants last season.

The signing of Karney gives St. Louis a chance to be more successful in two-back formations. The 27-year-old Karney was named to the All-Pro team in 2006 when he played for the New Orleans Saints. The Saints released him on March 5, putting one of the league's more respected fullbacks on the market. The Rams were quick to have him in for a visit.

The 5-foot-11, 258-pound Karney had 46 career starts in five seasons with the Saints. Karney will be the blocking back for Rams halfback Steven Jackson.

Rams released OT Orlando Pace

Offensive tackle Orlando Pace has been released by the Rams.

Pace, 33, was taken by the Rams as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft and has been with the team since then. He was a staple at left tackle, earning seven trips to the Pro Bowl. Pace was hampered by injuries in recent seasons. A knee injury caused him to miss two games and part of a third this past season.

The Rams save $6 million under the salary cap by letting Pace go.

With Pace gone, Alex Barron becomes the new left tackle, and if his offseason tutoring goes well, Jacob Bell will assume Barron’s old spot at right tackle. Recently signed free agent Jason Brown is the center, and Richie Incognito and John Greco are the favorites to start at guard.

Opinion:
It pains me that the Rams let go of one of the francise's greatest Offensive Left Tackle of all time but the team is moving on and I respect that. It would have been an "easier" decision if the Rams worked on trading or releasing Torry Holt first than starting with Orlando Pace. Holt has already said he wants out of St. Louis. Pace on the other hand can still play and loves to play for the Rams.

SS James Butler signs with Rams; FB Mike Karney to Visit

League sources confirmed Monday night that the Rams and free-agent strong safetyJames Butler have agreed to contract terms. An announcement out of Rams Park is expected Tuesday. Butler, who spent the previous four seasons with the New York Giants, reportedly will get a four-year deal that, with incentives, could net him $17 million. Butler, 6 feet 3 and 215 pounds, is 27.

In another news, Free-agent fullback Mike Karney and Rams officials will meet Tuesday at Rams Park. The team is looking for a lead-blocking fullback, and the 5-foot-11, 255-pound Karney, released by the Saints on Thursday, could fill the bill.

Karney, 27, is an Arizona State product who has spent all five of his NFL seasons in New Orleans. The Rams also had shown interest in former New England fullback Heath Evans, but he signed with the Saints last week.

Oshiomogho Atogwe slapped with the franchise tag

My Overview on the Rams Free Agency

With a new headcoaching staff and two new personnel for the purpose of handling the salarycap, the Rams enter free agency with a modest $14 million under the 2009 salary cap ceiling of $123 million. But this not enough considering the Rams' rookie salary amounts to about $6 million this year.

Here are some scenarios we can ponder on:

-Trading, releasing or restructuring the contracts of Torry Holt and Orlando Pace. This has been the rumors and speculation around the internet if these two Pro Bowlers are to be traded or release, the Rams would save a combined value of $14 million on the salary cap.

My speculation on this is that Big O is most likely willing to restructure because he loves to play as a Rams ( as evident on firing of his previous agent who has almost created a strain bewteen him and the Rams for stonewalling for more money) on the other hand Torry Holt, has previously express he might end up play for another team before his career ends (and expresses playing for his hometown team the Carolina Panthers) well I might be wrong and Torry should help the team restructuring his contract.

-Retaining Atogwe and Bartell is a priority. There are some reports that the Rams are focusing most of their money to retain O.J. Atogwe and Ron Bartell with Atogwe possibilty gonna get the francise tag. well I don't fault the Rams for doing so as Atogwe is the Rams best defensive player.

- Letting go of the underachievers and past-prime players. This one might get some attention as most of you might agree with me on this one. WR Drew Bennett and LB Pisa Tinoisamoa (frequent injuries), DT Claude Wroten (suspension), S Corey Chavous and DT La'Rio Glover (age). Of the aformention names, I might give Pisa Tinoisamoa some considerations of retaining as he has really contributed to the team but the rest won't matter if they are let go.

-Improvement on the O-line and Run Defense. This one is obviously the main goal of the Rams this offseason. If the Rams can get their clear answer on the free agency , the #2 pick on the draft will most like go on either an OT, WR or a trade down for a MLB.

The major focus will be solidifying the Offensive lines specially with Orlando Pace and Jacob Bell coming off from injuries as well as Alex Barron's inconsistencies.

Flajole, 54, has been linebackers coach at Carolina. He has been with the Panthers since 2003 but also has had NFL stints as an assistant coach with Green Bay and Seattle. Flajole hasn't worked on the same staff as Spagnuolo but was an assistant coach at the University of Missouri from 1989-93.

For three of those seasons at Mizzou, Flajole was part of a staff that included Andy Reid, the Eagles' head coach, who gave Spagnuolo his first NFL job.

Spagnuolo, the New York Giants defensive coordinator, and the Rams agreed on a four-year deal only hours after Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett departed St. Louis following his one night visit.

Spagnuolo, 49, has spent the past two seasons as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. He's known as a players' coach, but a coach who doesn't coddle players, either. Intense and energetic, he all but lived at the Giants' facility during the season, grinding film to find a weakness in the opponent, any nuance that might help.

Day 1 Draft Summary and Analysis

As I expected the Rams 1st round pick was the safest prospect in former Virginia defensive end Chris Long compare to LSU DT Glenn Dorsey. Coach Scott Linehan really liked C. Long's "intangibles" and he is excited to see him part of the defensive line that inludes ex-Pro Bowlers Leonard Little and LaRoi Glover with emerging tackles Adam Carriker and Clifton Ryan. Long will add some versatility on defense as he can play both left and right defensive end positions as well as stand up pass rusher as a linebacker (similar to what Philadelphia did Jevon Kearse before he went back to Tennessee).

Round Two on the other hand was a bit of a surprise personally as the Rams drafted WR Donnie Avery from University of Houston. I admit I have no knowledge about this guy because I would assume Cal WR DeSean Jackson would be here. Avery was the first pick overall for the Wide Reciever position (I was surprise that top WR prospects Devin Thomas and Limas Sweed where not picked during the 1st round). I did some research on Avery and i found out that he's a double threat as he has exceptional speed and he is also a good kick and punt returner. Some experts (and many Rams fans) argue that this team reached to make him the first receiver taken in the draft. But the Rams got something they needed. Once the run on receivers started in the second round, he probably would have gone somewhere else.

Houston played a spread offense, so Avery attacked defenses from every angle. He caught 210 passes for the Cougars, including 91 for 1,456 yards as a senior. For Donnie Avery's Scouting report you can go here.

To summarize the Rams draft, the team were able to fill some needed areas particularly on the defensive end position and depth at wide receiver and possible backup to Dante Hall.

It's beginning to look more and more like this will be a defensive end for the Rams. For a while there Jake Long looked like the obvious choice but even though he is still in the picture the signing of Jacob Bell to help shore up that offensive line probably makes it much less likely. The defensive line has been a problem area in St. Louis for a while now so after upgrading the interior with Adam Carriker and Clifton Ryan last year it might be time to look outside. Leonard Little is going to be 34-years-old next season and James Hall was cut so from a talent and need perspective there may not be a better fit than Chris Long, although if he's gone don't rule out Vernon Gholston.

Reche Caldwell Signs 1-Year Contract to play for the Rams

The Rams added some depth to the receiver position Tuesday, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with veteran wideout Reche Caldwell.

The former second-round choice of the San Diego Chargers comes to the Rams from Washington , where he played eight games last season under then Redskins and current Rams offensive coordinator Al Saunders.

Caldwell had 15 catches for 141 yards in 2007. He has spent six seasons in the league, his best coming with New England in 2006 when he had 61 grabs for 760 yards and four touchdowns.

On his arrival, Caldwell should immediately be in the mix as a potential slot receiver behind starters Torry Holt and Drew Bennett.

Bell Agrees to Terms [Repost]

A snow storm moving into the St. Louis area might have been enough to keep Jacob Bell in St. Louis for a little while. But that won’t go nearly as far as the six-year contract he agreed to with the team on Monday evening.

The Rams and Bell agreed to terms after a getting-to-know-you session that lasted most of Monday afternoon, according to team sources. The athletic guard comes to St. Louis from Tennessee, where he earned a reputation as one of the league’s fastest-rising young players on the interior of the offensive line.

Bell immediately fills a void on the offensive line and should help form one of the most athletic left sides in the game next to tackle Orlando Pace. At 6’4, 295 pounds, Bell isn’t the mauler type, but that doesn’t mean he can’t hold his own as a run blocker in addition to his nimble feet in pass protection.

The Titans drafted Bell in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL Draft and Bell has been an ascending player since. He has been a starter for three of his four seasons in the league In that time he has played in 55 games with 46 starts.

The left guard position has been ravaged by injury in recent seasons as starter Mark Setterstrom was lost to a season ending knee injury. Bell has started 43 games at left guard but also has experience at tackle where he has started a trio of games on the right side.

According to one team source, Bell was the highest rated interior lineman on the team’s free agent list heading into the offseason.

Terms of the contract were not immediately available. Bell is expected to be introduced as a Ram officially on Tuesday in a 10 a.m. news briefing at the Russell Training Center.

RAMS Kicker Jeff Wilkins Retires

Kicker Jeff Wilkins officially decided to retire on February 29, bringing to an end one of the most successful careers a kicker has ever put together.

Wilkins had indicated that retirement could be on the horizon after the team’s final game of the season against Arizona because of some health issues, specifically a worn down and beaten right (kicking) leg.

Wilkins apparently decided that the leg wasn’t good enough to return for a 15th season. In that final game, Wilkins tied the record for most consecutive extra points made at 371.

Never one for the spotlight, though, Wilkins will go into retirement with just a share of that record.

But nobody can doubt Wilkins’ track record. On a 14-year career, 11 with the Rams, Wilkins set essentially every kicking record in franchise history and will leave as one of the most accurate kickers in league history.

Wilkins holds the NFL record for greatest success rate on kicks of 49 yards and longer and owns team records for longest field goal (57 yards), field goals made (265) and scoring (1,223 points).

Wilkins struggled some in 2007, mainly because of health issues as he was 24-of-32 on field goals and hit all of his 25 extra point attempts.

For most of his career, Wilkins has maintained he would know when the time to step away would come. He played in 200 games over the course of his career.

Rams signs Josh Brown as Wilkins' Replacement

A simple twist of fate brought Josh Brown home or at least as close as he can get to home Saturday morning.

In the prime of his career as one of the league’s top place kickers, Brown had a good grasp on his options as recently as Thursday night. Those choices didn’t include St. Louis.

By Friday morning, Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins had retired and the Rams immediately knew they didn’t have to travel too far outside the NFC West Division to find Wilkins’ replacement.

So it was only fitting as the man they called “Money” retired that the Rams pursued Brown and gave him plenty of currency to ensure he would be in St. Louis for the next five years.

With that, the Rams made Brown one of the highest paid kickers in the league, signing him to a five-year deal worth about $14 million Saturday morning.

Free Agency Scenario so far

The free agency period so far was full of surprises as some familiar players are gone and some have came back. The most notable loss was when former Pro Bowler and long time Rams Wide Receiver Isaac Bruce was released due to salary-cap reasons. He later on signed with the division rival San Francisco 49ers who now have former Rams Head Coach Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator.

On the other hand one player is glad to be back as a Ram. Former Kansas City and Miami quarterback Trent Green was signed to be Marc Bulger's back replacing Gus Frerotte. Green was happy to be back in St. Louis as he grew within the area and has many friends living in the area. The signing of Green has at least established a solid backup for QB Marc Bulger.

2008 Rams Offseason : The Hiring of Al Saunders

The Rams enter the 2008 season with a lot of revamping that is desperately needed to improve from one of the franchise's worst seasons. The Rams (3-13 in 2007) recently hired offensive coordinator Al Saunders to help improve the offense that has lost its touch since Scott Linehan replace Mike Martz as head coach 3 years ago .

Saunder has worked with the Rams before as Dick Vermeil's recievers coach and has worked with Vermeil in Kansas City as the offensive coordinator. Saunder's style is similar to Mike Martz style of offense as Saunder is a former assistant under Don Coryell's system.

I've been a fan of American football which makes me different from other Filipinos who are more into basketball (or the NBA specifically). But I find American football more exciting than basketball. Maybe because of the hard hits and the fast-pace plays that it brings to game.

I got introduced to American football or the NFL when my father rented a all four VCR tapes of the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl Games (Superbowl XVI, XIX, XXIII and XXIV in particular). With those games I instantly become a fan the great (and future Hall-Of-Fame) quarterback Joe Montana.

I followed the NFL games until I graduated highschool. From there, my interest for football games was put on hold because I was very busy in college.

In 1999, my passion for the game got a back when I was able to watch Super Bowl XXXIV. There I saw how Superbowl and NFL MVP guided the St. Louis Rams to win their first ever SuperBowl trophy. Since then I've been following the NFL and St. Louis Rams even in the off-season.

My favorite time every year is when I do share my opinions on who should the Rams pick during the June draft picks. So far, I was disappointed by the Rams picked.

Since the evolution of the internet, I can now follow the team's progress and other news thru ESPN.com and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch websites. Now I made this blog to share my rants, opinions and news about the St. Louis Rams.
